The Dance Competitions for Niko's Solo & Duo Pieces

The last 3 weekends have been busy with dance competitions.  We also attended Finishing Touch adjudication.  It has been such an amazing experience to see the pieces he choreographed, mixed the music for and practiced so hard for, pay off.

During the summer Niko told me all he wanted to do was create a hip hop dance trio and compete.  It kept falling through in so many different ways.  In October I remember sitting with him in the kitchen-trying to work through all the scenarios he’d tried and had failed to get different hip hop groups to happen.   He was really doubting if anything was going to happen.  He had one girl from his dance group that had stuck through and believed in his concept and ideas.  He made a final decision to choreograph a duo with her, and then decided to choreograph a hip hop solo (even though so many people told him it would be weird, all it took was one person he looked up to that said “just do it”).

He spent time choreographing, mixing music and rolling his eyes at me when I gave him suggestions.

Fast forward, he didn’t know what people were going to think of his effort.  Would judges like it?  Would he represent the studio he’s at well?  He didn’t want to let his dance partner down either.

1 month ago he performed in front of 3 dance judges from Utah that told him “He had the IT factor that couldn’t be taught” and “you can go all the way with dance if you want you”.

Dance Fierce Competion he won:
1st in intermediate solos
2nd overall solos
1st hip hop improv
1st in duos
2nd overall duos

America on Stage Competition he won:
1st place high gold 29.99 score solo
1st place high gold Duo

Aspire Competition he won:
1st place Diamond solo
3rd overall for solo
Judge's Choice for Solo
Duo Diamond Place

I know that winning isn’t everything, but to receive validation for his crazy ideas was something I hope he always remembers. He's already started planning & hoping for next year and I can't wait to see, not only what he comes up with, but what doors will open for him!
