It has been so hard for me to write this post because the week this occurred was an exhausting one, and was just a really hard thing for our family to go through.
It started with a text I received from Johnny on Monday 2/26 while I was at work. Johnny said "My mom just called me to say she was dying and that she loved me". I immediately called him just to check and make sure everything was ok. Wasn't sure if this was her not feeling well, or if it meant she really was dying, etc. He wasn't sure and was heading over to her apartment with Navy to see what was up. About 20 min later, I got a call from Johnny asking what the non emergency number was for an ambulance & asked if I'd call it. He didn't tell me what was happening, but I hurried and grabbed my stuff, my coworker Michelle drove me to Annette's apartment down the street while I was on the phone with dispatch. When I arrived paramedics were bringing a stretcher up at the same time. When I arrived she looked pretty much unconscious in her chair. She was obviously very weak and could barely talk. They brought her to the hospital and I met them up there about 20-30 min later so I could get a sitter for Navy and get things situated. By the time I arrived she was completely unresponsive and they had her on a machine that was breathing for her. We couldn't go back there to be with her because they were doing lots of testing to see what was going on with her.
When we were able to finally speak with the doctor and see her they said because she was breathing so shallow she was suffering from CO2 poisoning from not being able to take deep breaths, was suffering from respiratory failure, tested positive for RSV and they were not sure what the outcome was going to be. Longest, emotional day. We all hung out at the hospital all day, waiting for progress, updates, anything. Because she tested positive for RSV, Navy wasn't able to go see her at all. In the evening we brought the kids to say goodbye to grandma. We had Bishop Derrick give her a blessing with Bro Sorenson. It didn't mention anything about her coming back to us, but they mentioned she'll feel peace and comfort soon and that Heavenly Father was very aware of her. The doctor kept saying that she should've made some sort of progress and she wasn't. They also said a lot of strain was being put on her heart, which was dangerous. The decision was made for us to all go home, get some sleep and the next morning we'd ask for her to be put in comfort care, where she could peacefully pass away.
We didn't sleep (maybe an hour?) and took the kids to school on Tuesday. We buckled up for what we knew was going to be the longest hardest day (even harder than the day before). After we dropped the kids off Johnny grabbed a soda before we headed up to the hospital. While there we received a text from Kristen that said "She's awake and talking". We hurried up there, and sure enough, she was awake, with the breathing treatment and talking a little. The doctors and nurses kept saying they assumed she was going to pass away over night, but sometime in the morning she came back around. It was truly the biggest miracle.
Fast Forward, she stayed in the hospital until Friday (so about 5 days) and was then transferred to Carriage Cove Rehabilitation Center where she still is. She is very weak and sick from the RSV infection and has a ways to go getting stronger, healed and being able to move and take care of herself. As of right now, she can sit on the edge of the bed, stand with a walker for a minute or two, and that's about it. Hopefully she can continue to keep getting better!
