Goodbye, Things

I just finished reading this book on Minimalist Living and it was so good and inspirational!  I wanted to write down a few things that stood out to me in the book:

*minimalists are people who know what's truly necessary for them, find the things that are genuinely important to them

*This is the pattern of everything in our lives.  No matter how much we wish for something, over time it becomes a normal part of our lives, and then a tired old item that bores us, even though we did actually get our wish.  And we end up being unhappy.

*There are emotional limitations to the feelings of happiness that we're able to experience when we obtain something for the first time.

*The problem lies in how we convey our value to others.

*we feel like we use items to communicate our personality and values.

*Our possessions are supposed to be our tools

*there are more things to gain when removing excess like time, space, freedom and energy

*it's wiser to clean up our system and delete all the unnecessary data so we're free to function efficiently and happily

*we all have a roommate we call them "our things"

*they create extra work for us, do we really want to continue paying rent for them?  It's best to just kick them out.

*feeling the spark of joy that some items will bring, will help you focus

*discard any possessions that you can't talk about with passion

*a person who reduces so they can focus on what's really important

*when we practice minimalism, we'll spend less time being distracted by the media or by advertisements because we become aware that we already have everything that we need.

*fewer possessions=easier to clean the house

*you free yourself from all the materialist messages that surrounds us

*when you realize there is nothing lacking the whole world belongs to you

*want to know how to make yourself instantly unhappy?  compare yourself to someone else.

*experiences give you longer periods of happiness, experiences can't be taken from you

*gives our important things space to be important

*the only way to focus on the important things is to reduce the things that aren't important

*you'll have less stress because there aren't all those things around soaking up your energy, by not comparing yourself to others you'll relieve even more stress.

*lose weight when you do away with your possessions because you'll realize this is enough for me.

*tasks become easier, enjoy housework

*the more material possessions you have, the more energy it takes to handle your everyday chores

*let's you focus on real people

*when you reduce the number of things you own, you can devote more time and energy to your interpersonal relationships, you won't need to depend on your things for happiness.

*gratitude comes, people are used to focusing on what they don't have instead of what they do have

And so much more!  I need to read and re read this book throughout my life as a reminder of minimalist living and incorporate this in lots of aspects of my life!  Such a good read and can't wait to apply this even more so to my life!
