Hobbies!

One of my New Year’s Resolutions this year is to find a new hobby.  About a month ago I was thinking about how I spend my free time.  First off, I’m a mom to 4 kids so I really don’t have “free time”, but I realized there is always some time to myself, whether it’s 5 min or a stretch during Navy’s nap.  So what is my free time filled with?

Well, if I’m not taking care of the kids my time is spent doing dishes & laundry galore, hopping onto social media and comparing myself to others, budgeting and staring at my body in the mirror wishing it wasn’t so squishy and worrying about the future. Now these things are obviously not what I consider my hobbies, but they are things that sometimes fill my time.  It made me kind of sad.

So immediately I hopped on Pinterest & searched “Hobbies for Women”.  I pinned a few sites that sounded like they might be a good read for later.  A couple weeks later I finally found the time to hop onto those pages.  I learned a few things:

 1.  Some of the things they listed are definitely not things I would find any joy doing like sewing and crocheting.

2. A lot of things I wouldn’t consider hobbies like blogging/journaling, or saving money/thrifting, but they in fact are.  (Which prompted me to look up the definition of what a hobby really is and it said an activity one does in their leisure for pleasure-ok easy enough, so does sleeping count??).

3.  There are a lot of things that I hadn’t thought about doing that I’m thinking I might need to try!

So technically according to these articles I’m not completely hobby-less.  Once a month I do a few pages for Navy’s baby book and that’s considered scrapbooking.  I’m now starting to blog/journal more-that counts!  Going on walks and bike rides during the summer are definitely hobbies!  Even my house obsession, like design, architecture & decorating is not technically a waste of time, but really is something I love to spend my time doing.  So I’m not as pathetic as I thought I was.

However, I do still have hobbies I want to start pursuing or maybe pursue more.  These are ones I want to incorporate more in my life.

  • Traveling (even places that are close by)
  • Read more (find a variety!)
  • Golf (summertime of course)
  • Kayak
  • Learn ukulele with Willow
  • Start practicing piano again
  • Couponing
  • Going to baseball games during the summer

Now I know that trying to accomplish all of these things could be overwhelming, which isn’t what this is about, but these are just ideas I’m giving myself.  And even when I feel like I might be super boring and have no hobbies I need to remind myself keeping 4 little humans alive is a pretty good way to fill my time.  I'm excited to see what the year holds and hope I’ll be more intentional with my time!  I can’t wait to see what growth and/or hobbies will come this year!
